Harry Potter and the Library of Surfside

The poster will showcase Surfside Library’s Harry Potter Club from this past summer. Over the course of 10 magical weeks, young customers explored the themes of Harry Potter through various activities, including a sorting ceremony and an escape room. The program was a huge success.

Connecting Libraries to Campus Communities Through Collaborative Displays

To better elevate diverse voices and materials, we coordinated our library displays with campus events. For example, our Black History Month display, African-American foodways and the development of soul food, coincided with Winthrop's Interdisciplinary Food Conference. The collaboration benefited all parties and the positive feedback has encouraged additional partnerships.

The Good, the Badge, and the Ugly: Takeaways from Creating an Information Literacy Badge

Digital badges, a.k.a. micro-credentials, are micro-certifications which indicate competence in particular skills—in this case, research. Combining information literacy skills with a Wikipedia editing project to create the badge was easier said than done. Find out what went right, what went wrong, and what we learned along the way.

Tangled, Mangled, and Strangled: How One Tech Services Department Coped in a Thicket of Weeding

This poster details the initial stages of this ongoing project, to provide empirical grounding for library decision making: evaluating existing literature, finding and organizing legal cases, and survey planning.

PONI Up!: Using Data to Give Students Want They Need

Research & Instruction Librarians assessed student users in order to "pony up" and provide better access to services promoting information literacy.

Accessibility: Just Do It!

In 2019, The South Carolina State Library and Charleston County Public Library each formed an Accessibility Team to identify and begin addressing accessibility issues in their libraries. In this poster, we will summarize our process, goals, and the team functions. We will also provide the resources we used to evaluate our accessibility and the recommended steps for other libraries to begin this process.

Horry County Memorial Library's First Annual Volunteer Fair

An overview of the the entire process of planning and hosting a successful volunteer fair. This will include both a toolkit that HCML is able to use to transfer between branches as well as a toolkit that different systems can adopt and manipulate to best suit their uses.

Digitally Embedded Librarianship: Adding Library Instruction to LMS Courses

Illustrating digitally embedded librarianship and collaborating with faculty and digital learning strategists to incorporate library instruction into online courses.  Examples include embedding in a certification course for faculty teaching online, learning modules for a Psychology course investigating happiness, and videos for an invasion ecology class in the Forestry Department.

Responsive (re)design: Balancing University Design and Library Priorities at a Small Academic Library

As a small academic library embarked on a major redesign of their web presence, they sought to incorporate university design decrees while effectively balancing good design, accessibility, and library website needs. The poster will reveal how this library utilized LibGuidesCMS for their redesign, as well as highlight challenges and design considerations.

Inclusive and Accessible: Clemson's Affordable Learning Program

Seeking to address the problem of the high cost of textbooks and to create a more inclusive and diverse student population, Clemson University Libraries implemented an Affordable Learning program. It encourages faculty adoption of Open Educational Resources and the use of open source and low-cost homework systems in high enrollment classes. It also established a textbook lending program. This session highlight's Clemson's strategies, experiences and successes in improving student access to low cost learning materials.

Making Space for Makerspaces

Communities that learn and make together, stay (and grow) together. Makerspaces build peer-to-peer relationships and amplify learning. They can meet a variety of user needs and emphasize accessibility and functionality. A makerspace is a shared, safe space where authentic experiences happen, allowing libraries to define the culture of their communities.

Have MLIS, Will Travel: International Librarianship

Through a joint partnership with University of South Carolina SLIS and University of Buffalo, I was able to participate in an international librarianship course with an experiential learning trip to Costa Rica. During the trip we were able to visit and learn from university, public and school libraries, museums and special archives. This poster will outline my experience with international librarianship in Costa Rica.

Marvelous Creations

Horry County Memorial Library's system utilizes interactive Marvel Kits that are STEM-centered. Our Youth Services Department created each kit that is circulated among our ten branches. Included in our session are Robotics, 3D printing, K'Nex, Rubix Cubes and Virtual Reality.

Digitizing Community Histories

To learn more about creating a Digital Studio, we digitized the history of our library system and produced a short documentary in celebration of our 70th anniversary. The production offers an example of the services we will be able to offer families and communities interested in preserving local histories.

Thinking Outside of the (Lunch) Box: Building a Program Around Summer Feeding
