Cataloging Librarian
The South Carolina Historical Society, the state's oldest and largest
private manuscript archive, seeks a motivated and detail-oriented individual
to perform a number of archival and library related tasks including
cataloging, outreach, and reference assistance. Reporting to the Archivist,
the Cataloging Librarian will create EAD finding aids and MARC-format
catalog records according to national standards for a wide range of literary
and historical collections including manuscripts as well as published
materials. In addition, the Cataloging Librarian must be able to assist a
diverse clientele of academic and lay researchers by explaining library and
archival policy, conducting reference interviews, identifying and retrieving
research materials and monitoring patrons.
The successful candidate will possess the following skills: flexibility in
performing different cataloging tasks as the needs and priorities of
collection preservation, development and cataloging change; responsiveness
and willingness to work on special projects and assignments; strong service
orientation; analytical, communication and training skills; ability to
prioritize work to ensure that goals are realized; and the ability to work
independently and as part of a team in a production-oriented dynamic
environment with a commitment to professional development and growth.
Requirements:
* MLS from an ALA-accredited library school, or equivalent combination
of education and experience.
* Significant experience with processing and describing manuscript
collections.
* Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging standards, practices, and
products, including but not limited to LC classification, LCSH, MARC
formats, AACR2, LCRIs, DACS, and DCRM.
* Knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemas and tools, such as Dublin
Core, EAD, or OAI.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team
setting.
* Ability to lift and handle containers that may weigh as much as 40
pounds.
Preferred:
* Working knowledge of OCLC Connexion and Millennium (Innovative
Interfaces) software (highly desirable)
* Familiarity with CONTENTdm digital collection management software
* Knowledge of South Carolina or Southern history is a plus.
Salary:
Minimum starting salary: $29,000
