Hi everyone,

If you know any teachers and/or students who might be interested in participating in the Letters About Literature Contest, please send this information to them. This year, due to budget cuts, we are unable to send printed fliers and information to teachers in the mail like we have done in the past so please help get the word out by email. At the bottom of this is a brief promotional video to help spread the word. This year’s deadline is December 12.

Thanks!

Curtis

Dear Educator/Librarian:

Do you know about the Letters About Literature (LAL) Competition? Do you have students who might be interested in writing their favorite author a letter about how their book has changed their life or way of thinking? If you do, then the LAL Competition is something to really share with your students.

If you and your students participated in last year’s Letters About Literature national writing program, you will be happy to know that this year’s LAL competition is now underway. The new entry guidelines are posted online at the new website www.lettersaboutliterature.org. Monthly contest updates will be provided on the web site throughout the school year.

Once again this year state and national prizes for children will be awarded. LAL will also be awarding thousands of dollars in library grants as a way to promote literacy and reader response among all young readers. The national winners themselves help to select the library that will receive the grants. What a powerful way for a young person to make a difference in his or her school or community!

Please visit www.lettersaboutliterature.org to download the new guidelines and required entry coupon, plus take some time to explore the lesson plans and winning letters from past years. Each year, more than 55,000 young people from across the country enter LAL and what they write to authors is amazing! This year’s deadline is December 12th, 2009.

LAL supports national standards for teaching language arts & reading as recommended by the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association. The State Library’s Center for the Book is the statewide sponsor for this annual competition and will host an awards ceremony in the spring for all student winners who will read their winning letters.

Please encourage your students to submit their letters to their favorite authors. SC winners will be judged by an expert panel of librarians and educators from across the state. Nine winners in three categories will be announced and winners will receive cash prizes!

Sincerely,

Dr. Curtis R. Rogers, Coordinator
