Durant named dean of FMU's Rogers Library

FLORENCE - After a successful year and a half assignment as interim dean
of Francis Marion University's James A. Rogers Library, Joyce M. Durant
has been promoted to dean, effective Jan. 1.

"Joyce is a remarkable leader and a superb librarian. She enjoys the
support and respect of the entire university community and will do an
extraordinary job as dean," said FMU President Luther F. Carter. "I am
delighted to promote her to this position."

The Marion native has been employed with FMU since she graduated from
the institution in 1973. After earning a Bachelor of Science in business
administration, Durant began working as a clerk-stenographer in the
library's reference department. In 1974, she transferred to the
acquisitions department and within six months was promoted to Library
Technical Assistant III. When the acquisitions librarian retired in
1980, Durant became second in charge of the department. Three years
later, the acquisitions librarian was promoted to director of the
library and Durant was appointed coordinator of acquisitions.

In 1988, she earned a master's degree from the University of South
Carolina and was promoted to acquisitions librarian. In 2006, she was
promoted to professor of library science. At the retirement of Paul Dove
in 2008, Durant was named interim dean of the library.

"I am thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the library's
efforts to fulfill its mission of helping students become information
literate, lifelong learners," Durant said. "I look forward to continued
work with the library's dedicated staff to develop strong programs and
innovative services that are responsive to the needs of students,
faculty, staff and community members in this information age."
