Dear Friends,

In November of 2008, the library world lost a true champion of
children's literacy and friend, Penny Hayne.  The School of Library and
information Science and The South Carolina Center for Children's Books
and Literacy at the University of South Carolina is pleased to announce
the creation of The Penny Hayne Memorial Children's Books Collection. 

The Penny Hayne Memorial Children's Books Collection will be dedicated
to the loving memory of Penny Hayne and her enduring legacy of work with
libraries and children in South Carolina.  The Newbery and Caldecott
Award Collection at the South Carolina Center for Children's Books and
Literacy will be dedicated as the Penny Hayne Memorial Children's Books
Collection.  All current Newbery and Caldecott holdings in our library
will display a bookplate with a dedication to Penny.  Any future
purchases for the collection will also display the bookplate.  An
individual donor may also purchase an award winning book to dedicate
from them in memory of Penny    

 

The South Carolina Association of School Librarians has graciously
donated funds for a Plaque to be created memorializing this collection.
We hope you will join us for a dedication of the collection and
thanksgiving for Penny Hayne on November, 24, 2009 at the South Carolina
Center for Children's Books and Literacy. This will truly be a special
occasion.  

 

We ask that you consider how you would like to help perpetuate the
memory of Penny and her dedication to library services to children.  All
future money donated to the fund will be used for the overall upkeep of
the collection, the purchase of new books, and to bring in professional
development speakers.
