Hello everyone,
For those of you that don't know me, my name is Adam Haigh and I am a reference librarian at Lander University in Greenwood, SC. I am also the second vice president of SCLA, which makes me your membership chair. We have 204 current members of SCLA. Last year we had around 450 members, so in doing the math...that means that several of you have not renewed your membership for the current year (246 to be exact :)). I realize of course that of those members, some may have moved out of South Carolina to other destinations, but for those of you are still here, please do consider renewing your membership now. There are many, many benefits to being a member of the South Carolina Library Association (I'd be happy to provide a list). SCLA is not just for librarians. We have a Paraprofessional Concerns round table, and we also have library student membership rates. Please take a look around our website and you will probably find a group that is right for you. Here's a link to that page: http://www.scla.org/index.php/Governance/YourAssociation
If there is anything I, or any of the other board members can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask us. I would love to see us at least around 550 members by the end of this year, 600 would be even better. If you have already joined, thank you so much. If you haven't please considering joining now. If you are new to South Carolina, then welcome (and please join SCLA). Our organization is certainly one we all should be proud of. I have been a member since January of 2006, and it has always been a pleasure. There are so many talented librarians of all types in our state, and SCLA is a great way to network, connect, and share ideas. Each time I go to a conference, I always come back with ideas that I can apply at Lander. With our current economic crisis, libraries and librarians are even more important. We are centers of communities, universities, towns and cities. We are the people and places that enrich the lives of the citizens of South Carolina. If you haven't heard yet, this year's conference theme is: South Carolina Libraries: Diverse People and Exceptional Services. It will be held October 28-30 at the Columbia Marriott, 1200 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC. If you haven't been to one of our conferences before, mark the date on your calendars now. Ray Turner, our first vice president has done an excellent job in putting together our conference so far, and I am sure it will be great.
You can join or renew online through our website (via Paypal): http://www.scla.org/index.php/Documents/Membership
If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. Also, if you would all forward this email to at least 5 colleagues, I would appreciate it. Together we can make the South Carolina Library Association flourish and grow.
