South Carolina Library Association
Editorial Committee – Annual Report
2005

Submitted by Linda Heimburger, Committee Chair

The SCLA Editorial Committee published four issues of News from the South Carolina Library Association. The October conference issue was printed and sent out to the membership. Online editions of the newsletter are archived at http://www.scla.org/Documents/Newsletters.

In January 2005, SCLA Webmaster Paul Lewis developed a revision of the SCLA Web Site. The old website posed some limitations in creating updates due to its hard coded menu and limited searching of .html files only. At the February 12, 2005 Leadership Planning Retreat, Paul announced that the new wiki web site would allow SCLA committees and round tables to edit their own pages. Another benefit is the ability to create .pdf interactive forms. Paul offered to train individuals on how to edit their sections on the website.

Editorial Committee members were emailed links to view and vote on appropriate skins for the overall look of the website. Members voted.

At the March 16, 2005 Executive Board Meeting, the motion was made to adopt the new website redesign with the skin that was closest to the former look of the site. The Executive Board approved.

Also at the Planning Retreat, the committee decided, at Curtis Rogers’ suggestion, to start special topic themes for the newsletter. Innovative technology in libraries was the topic featured in the April 2005 issue and Library consortia was the special topic featured in the July 2005 issue.

In August, Curtis Rogers and Sara Thigpen designed a librarianship recruitment brochure entitled “Have you thought about becoming a Librarian?”. Ray Turner created an “SCLA Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship” brochure. The editorial committee proofread these publications and they were approved for publication by the Executive Board.

This year, the committee received requests to advertise in the newsletter and to submit book reviews to the newsletter. Linda contacted other editors of state library association newsletters to see what others are doing with advertising. Curtis suggested the person post the ad to a listserv. The decision was made by President Joyce Durant to not get involved in advertising. The issue of whether to include book reviews in the newsletter will be addressed by the committee in 2006.

Anne Vaught will be retiring in 2006 and will no longer be serving on the committee. One place is now available for someone to join the committee.
