In 2013, Richland Library in Columbia, South Carolina embarked on a mass ive system-wide project, involving all eleven branches, to convert its enti re non-fiction collection from Dewey to a language-based classification sys tem. Using BISAC (Bookseller Industry Standards and Communications) as a ju mping off point, Richland Library created ACCESS, four language-based class ification schemes based on the items in our collection. In this session, yo u will learn why Richland Library decided to undertake this innovative proj ect, how we accomplished the task in less than five years, and what the ult imate result of this project is for staff and customer experience.
