2006 Public Library Section Annual Report

The Executive Committee met during the year. Ideas for the new year were initiated and a workshop was discussed as well as programs for the Annual Conference. The workshop plan never came to fruition. Officers were elected at the Public Library Section meeting during the annual SCLA conference. The officers for 2007 are:

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The Public Library Section sponsored several events at the 2006 SCLA annual conference which meet on Hilton Head Island, November 30 –December 1.

1.Raising the Dead:: Creating Obituary Indexes in Public Libraries
Susan Boyd of Greenville County Public Library, Debbie Bloom of Richland County Public Library, and Grace Cordial and Dennis Adams of Beaufort County Library were panel members for this event. The panel discussed methods used in creating indexes for their libraries. The presenters included information about the time, money, and supplies necessary for creating both print and electronic obituary indexes. The panelists also demonstrated their on-line indexes for the audience.

2.Three U’s: Unattended, Unruly and Unwanted Children
This program was co-sponsored by the Public Library and Youth Services section. A panel of those who work in the public sector led this group in a discussion which focused on problems arising from unattended children in the library setting. Panel members were Rachel Pirkle of the ABBE Regional Library System, Michelle Williams of Lexington County Public Library, and 3 guests.

3.Ask a Reformista: Latinos and Libraries 101
Co-sponsored with the Carolina Chapter of Reforma. Robin Imperial,
Reforma Treasurer, and Cindi Sapp, Reforma Vice President, discussed needs of and approaches to the Latino Community.
