2003 Public Library Section Annual Report

The Public Library Section has had a busy year. The Executive Committee met three times and conducted a lot of planning by email. The first item of business was to re-activate the Public Library Section's Standing Committees. An interest form was sent out to every member of the Public Library Section to determine their interest in serving on one of five committees: Legislative Committee, Library & Personnel Standards, Public Relations Committee, Planning & Programming Committee, and By-Laws Committee. Due to a limited number of interest forms returned, the Public Library Section chose to re-activate only three of the committees: Legislative Committee, Library & Personnel Standards, Public Relations Committee. After contacting those interested in serving, the Committees and their members were announced at the Public Library's Section Annual Business Meeting held during the 2003 SCLA Annual Conference. These committees will begin serving in 2004. The committee members are:

Legislative Committee - Carl Stone, Margaret Shatswell, Frank Gadsden, Bertha Tucker and Vesta Baughman.

Library & Personnel Standards - David Moore, Joi Jones, Prudence Taylor, Paula Paul and Geri Gaskill.

Public Relations - Ann Rosen, Elizabeth Woodring, Jayne Moorman, and Penny Harvey.

The Public Library Section sponsored two programs at the 2003 SCLA Annual Conference in Columbia, SC. "Telling Your Story in the Local Media" was a panel discussion featuring Bill Rogers, Associated Press, Ron Fell, WVOC Radio, Padgett Lewis, Public Relations Manager at Richland County Public Library, and Pat McNeely, USC School of Journalism and Mass Communications. There were 45 attendees for this program. "Answers Now: 24/7 Reference" was a demonstration of a unique reference service offered by the Richland County Public Library. The presenters were Margie Richardson, Information Services Coordinator at Richland County Public Library and Clo Cammarata, Information Services Librarian at Richland County Public Library. This program was attended by approximately 20 people. Though the Public Library Section was unable to schedule a workshop for 2003, the planning and preparation for two possible workshops in 2004 has been done. At least one of these workshops may be ready by Spring 2004.

The Public Library Section also held elections for its 2004 officers at the 2003 SCLA Annual Conference in Columbia, SC. Elected were: Dennis Adams as Chair, Clo Cammarata as Vice Chair, Sarah Thigpen as Secretary/Treasurer, John Robert Young as Delegate-at-large, and Stephen Smith as Delegate-at-large.
