2005 Annual Conference

The Bibliographic Instruction Interest Group co-sponsored with the Public Services Section a conference program titled “Taking Bibliographic Instruction to Our Users.” The program consisted of two presentations by Sarah Rothstein and Joshua Garris and concluded with a Q&A session. Approximately 30 people attended the session.

Sarah Rothstein is Coker College’s Catalog and Reference Librarian, managing library services and instruction to the College’s Evening and Extended Studies Program students. Her dynamic presentation focused on providing bibliographic instruction to students at Coker College’s extended campuses. In her presentation Sarah discussed how she markets bibliographic instruction to extended campuses, how she drives to the extended campuses to provide instruction as well as the challenges and rewards of working with distance students.

Joshua Garris is a Reference Librarian at the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library. Josh was responsible for implementing the Thomas Cooper Library’s virtual reference service and is currently responsible for maintaining the service. Josh’s presentation focused on the implementation and marking of the service and how the service is used to provide point-of-need bibliographic instruction to individuals.

Turnout for the annual business was small with only six attending. New officers for 2006 were elected and are as follows: Chair: Allison Faix (Coastal Carolina University); Vice-Chair: Christina Stewart (Florence County Public Library) and Secretary is Elizabeth Caldwell (Florence County Public Library).
