Youth Services Section
South Carolina Library Association

The Youth Services Section 2007 Board members were: Karen Allen – Chair, Cathy Pruett – Vice Chair, Becky James – Secretary, and Karen Edgar – Past Chair; all having been chosen at the end of SCLA’s 2006 Conference. YSS began the year with $355.55 in its treasury balance. The only money withdrawn from this balance was used to pay half of a speaker’s fee, Joada Hiatt, for the 2007 SCLA Conference and $25.00 for a gift certificate for the winner of the YSS logo contest.

The YSS Board met several times throughout the year and also maintained communication via email. We met with Felicia Vereen from the State Library to discuss options for having statewide dialog with youth services staff about current topics/trends, eventually deciding to use the CHILDLIB-L listserv maintained by the State Library. We also discussed the need for more Youth Services Section members. As a result of this discussion, we created and distributed flyers to youth services staff throughout the state, encouraging them to join SCLA and YSS. We also planned a logo contest in order to bring some visibility to the Youth Services Section. We created and distributed flyers; spoke at the Children’s Library Exchange and encouraged library staff to enter the contest. The winning entry was selected by the YSS Board and the logo was unveiled on the last day of the 2007 SCLA conference.

Two SCLA Conference programs were YSS sponsored with one being co-sponsored with the Public Library Section. Our programs were: “Teen Services You Can Replicate” and “Preserving and Telling Family Stories.” “Teen Services You Can Replicate” had an attendance of 35 and “Preserving and Telling Family Stories” had an attendance of 30. All comments about the programs/presenters were very positive.

Immediately following our final program on Friday, November 2, we unveiled the new YSS logo and conducted our last YSS meeting for 2007. At this time the 2008 YSS Board was chosen. They are: Cathy Pruett – Chair, Jeanette Main — Vice Chair, Michelle Williams – Secretary, and Karen Allen – Past Chair.
