The YSS section met once in 2003. At that meeting, information from the 2/8/03 Section/Roundtable was shared with attendees, and ideas for SCLA’s fall conference were discussed. Additionally, attendees expressed interest in holding a money-generating spring workshop and the ever-present need for membership recruitment was discussed.
Ideas for the fall conference quickly focused on two, carryovers from 2002: puppetry and graphic novels. No other meetings were held and members communicated through the listserv to facilitate the fall workshop preparation. (Plans for the spring workshop were abandoned due to conflicts with major programming events in various library systems.)
Contact was made with the University to offer speakers at their “Lunch ‘n Learn” to promote SCLA and specifically, YSS.
Both Fall Conference SLCA programs were offered Thursday, October 23. The first, ‘Nuff Said: Selecting Graphic Novels for Your Library, was presented by Elizabeth Shuping, with Horry County Memorial Library and featured tips on how to choose appropriately from this genre. In the afternoon, Carole Bledsoe, with the Spartanburg County Library, presented Puppetry from Scratch: Creating a Puppet Program in Your Library. Both were well-attended.
The business meeting, held to introduce the 2004 officers, was held immediately following the puppetry program. Mike Seagle was elected YSS Chair, Jan Kowal, Vice-Chair and Brenda Parker, Secretary. Those present discussed potential areas of focus for YSS in the coming year.
As in 2003, there is a need to garner support for SCLA and continue to work toward recruitment of YSS members.
