Total Membership as of SCLA Annual Conference: 47
YSS Budget (as of 10.31.2002): $764.00
There were three meetings held during 2002 in Columbia at the Richland County Public Library Main Branch. The YSS wanted to make sure that youth programs would be a part of the next conference, so the first meeting took place February 28th. Our group became acquainted with one another and really started brainstorming for upcoming program ideas. This first meeting accomplished much of the 2002 conference planning. The other meetings were working meetings dedicated to finalizing conference planning and programs.
The two programs the YSS presented at the 2002 Conference were:
Accelerated Reader: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Moderated by Jane Connor of the South Carolina State Library, the program offered insight into the Accelerated Reader program and other incentive based reading programs. Panelists included Dan Wuori, Early Childhood Literacy Coordinator for Richland Lexington County School District Five; Millie Hart, librarian at the Heathwood Hall Episcopal School; Leslie Barban, Children’s Room Manager of the Richland County Public Library. This panel proved to be informative, insightful, and passionate about reading and connecting children with literature.
Peer Programming: Using Teens to Develop Programs for Children
Andria Amaral, Young Adult Librarian for the Charleston County Public Library, discussed the importance of getting teens directly involved in programming. She presented a power point presentation on the success of the Harry Potter play performed by members of her TeenLAB. In addition, Andria brought six of her TeenLAB members to directly connect to audience members and reveal what teens really want and enjoy from their library and answer any questions. Having the teens present to discuss library services in an honest manner was a program highlight, and audience members enjoyed engaging Andria’s TeenLAB guests.
Plans for 2003
A primary challenge for the YSS is maintaining interest and participation from its members. Several workshop ideas have been discussed this year to take place in 2003. Possible ideas included make and take programs, graphic novel collection development, anime, and mock Caldecott awards. The YSS recognizes that this is an excellent way for the YSS to generate revenue for future conference program and to remain visible in youth librarianship throughout South Carolina.
Name Change Approved
At the 2002 SCLA Annual Conference, the proposed name change for our section was approved. The SCLA section Services for Children and Youth in School and Public Library (SCYPS) is now officially called the Youth Services Section (YSS).
