Annual Conference-October 22nd to 24th, 2003
At the 2003 SCLA Annual Conference, the Technical Services Section sponsored two programs and cosponsored another program. The program, “The Challenge of Change for Technical Services Operations,” was cosponsored with SOLINET. The speaker from SOLINET, Robert Hulhof-Schmidt, presented information about the changing and challenging world of technical services. He had some practical advice on how to deal with change. Around 35 people attended the Solinet presentation.
The two programs that were sponsored were “A Tour of Richland County Library including the Technical Services Department” and “Technical Services: Can a Vendor Be the Solution to Your Problems?” The Richland County Library tour was conducted by Lorraine Catoe and Frank Hite. It was very informative and enlightening to see how another library is run. The people attending had very positive things to say about the tour. The speakers for “Technical Services: Can a Vendor Be the Solution to your Problems?” were Mildred Finch and Martha Stakel. Ms. Finch is the Head of Technical Services at Spartanburg Public Library. Ms. Stakel is the Catalog Librarian at the College of Charleston. Mildred Finch presented a great overview of what to consider when looking at deciding whether or not to use an outside vendor. Martha Stakel expanded on these general principles by discussing a few specific cases that her library had experienced.
Based on audience participation, questions, and comments, the information presented was very valuable and appropriate. Around 30 people attended the session. Both Ms. Finch and Ms. Stakel were presented with small gifts of appreciation for their willingness to participate in the program sponsored by the Technical Services Section.
Business Meeting -October 23, 2003
The Business meeting was conducted at the conclusion of the “Technical Services: Can a Vendor Be the Solution to your Problems?” program. The Chair, Mary Daubenspeck, presided over the meeting. 12 members participated in the meeting. Ms. Daubenspeck called the meeting to order. The current financial situation for the Technical Service Section is good. The Balance as of 10/20/2003 was $1263.87. There was an item of new business on the agenda. Ms Daubenspeck proposed a new award be given by the Technical Services section in honor of Jane Walter Mason. As a former multi-year Chair of Technical Services Section, Jane Walter Mason felt it was important to promote improvement of skills in technical services. She was active in many organizations where her contributions helped further technical services. The Section agreed unanimously to present an award of excellent in her name each year. The language for the award was agreed on and the first award is scheduled to be awarded at the 2004 SCLA Conference. The official title of the award is the Jane Walter Mason Award for Excellence in Technical Services. Applications will be available on the SCLA website. The award is open to both Library Technical Assistants and Librarians. The winner will receive a plaque and one year’s paid membership to SCLA or the comparable cash award.
Ms. Daubenspeck presented the nominations for candidates for Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary of the Section and asked if there were any additional nominations from the floor. As there were none, she asked the Section members to vote to accept the candidates for 2004. They were voted in unopposed. The new Chair of the Technical Services Section is Carolyn Goolsby. The new Vice-Chair is Derek Wilmott. The new Secretary is Mary Rose Adkins.
Ms. Daubenspeck opened the floor for comments and suggestions. One suggestion was to have a program “Cataloging for Non-Catalogers” for public service employees. This could open dialog and create better relationships between public and technical services through improved understanding of the work technical service employees do.
Ms. Daubenspeck thanked all who participated in the technical service programs and the Technical Service Section this year. She stated that she was looking forward to seeing what the new officers would bring to the next year. She expressed her gratitude at being able to serve the Technical Service Section and to the three people who were planning on taking over in 2004 to carry the Section forward. Ms. Daubenspeck adjourned the meeting.
