2002 SCLA Technical Services Section Annual Report
Business Meeting 10–25–02
Jane Mason of Greenville Technical College presided. She recapped some of the requests for programs at the last business meeting in Columbia at the 2001 SCLA Conference, outsourcing being the topic of most interest.
The chair asked everyone to try to generate more interest in the Technical Services section of SCLA.
Diane Brown of Solinet spoke to the group on the programs that SOLINET offers in the way of outsourcing, after outlining what outsourcing is. Ms. Brown gave details on the services of OCLC PromptCat; World Cat; Gov. Doc; Language Sets; OCLC ACS.
New section officers for next year are Mary Daubenspeck of Spartanburg Technical College, chair, and Tracey Pearson of Claflin University, secretary. Vice-chair is vacant at this time.
The section program theme was “Issues in the Electronic Environment.” Annette Blum of College of Charleston addressed some cataloging issues, especially those that she has encountered in her newest job of cataloging special collections. She remarked on how she had to seek help on many questions, such as when cataloging a manuscript in Hebrew. She remarked also how she had found help through OCLC on typical questions. One of the things she stressed was for catalogers to subscribe to the listserve AutoCat.
Joyce Durant spoke on issues in acquisitions, focusing on the points of library mission, collection scope, cost, medium, statistics, archiving, bundling, and “keeping up.” There was discussion at the end of the program, with participants contributing information on outsourcing, new Technical Service position requirements, and other topics.
