2004 SCLA Special Library Section Annual Report
The SCLA Special Library Section has not been active in the last couple of years. This year, an effort has been made to revitalize the section. This year’s officers started out as Jeanette Bergeron, chair; Mandy Turner, vice chair; and Nancy Miller, secretary. When Jeanette had to go on medical leave this year, the officers became as follows: Mandy Turner, chair; and Nancy Miller, secretary. Those officers will serve in their current positions in 2005. We do not have a vice chair right now, but calls have been put out asking for volunteers to fill this position. Whether or not the position will be filled this year remains to be seen.
Prior to the change in leadership, an effort was made to recruit more librarians for the Special Library Section. We gathered membership lists from the Piedmont Library Association, the South Carolina Chapter of the Special Library Association, and the Southern Chapter of the Medical Library Association for this purpose. We primarily concentrated on recruiting librarians from the Upstate of South Carolina as SCLA as a whole needs more members from the Upstate. This recruitment effort by the section will continue in 2005.
The section was quite busy during this year’s fall conference in Greenville, SC. We sponsored the Special Librarians’ Dutch Treat Networking Dinner, which took place at the Lemongrass Thai Restaurant in downtown Greenville. A total of five people attended this dinner, and a good time was had by all.
We also sponsored a session at the conference that was entitled “For the Love of Libraries: A S.C. Historian’s True Confession.” The session featured retired Furman University history professor and renowned historian Dr. A.V. Huff. He spoke about the different and funny experiences he’s had in libraries and the overall positive impact libraries have had on him and his career. He was very well received at the conference and made everyone proud to be a librarian and proud of their profession. We also had our business meeting during the conference; and even though only three people attended, we still were able to discuss ideas for next year’s conference and for the section as a whole.
Overall, the SCLA Special Library Section is off to a good start in becoming a major part of SCLA again. The section looks forward to an even brighter future in 2005.
Respectfully submitted,
Amanda B. Turner
