Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship Committee Annual Report 2004
It has been an exciting year for the Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship Committee. Because of the Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship and other state-wide initiatives, the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA), in cooperation with the School of Library and Information Science at the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, are on the cutting edge of developing and ensuring that there will be a growing diverse workforce in South Carolina libraries. In fact, the Committee received a number of inquires from other library associations, such as those located in Kentucky and Tennessee, asking SCLA to share with them what we are doing in South Carolina to promote, recruit and develop minority librarians in the State.
The agenda for this year’s Scholarship Committee included, but was not limited to, ideas for fundraisers and increased minority recruitment into librarianship. At the March 2004 Board Meeting, the Executive Board approved a motion presented by committee member and Past President, Norman Belk to allow vendors to contribute to the Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship on three levels of giving: $25.00 Sponsor, $50.00 Leadership Sponsor, and $100.00 Presidential Sponsor. Initial requests were sent to the vendors in their registration packets. Three vendors responded with donations. They were: ProQuest ($100.00 Presidential Sponsor), Mr. Bill Sanders of S & W Distributors ($50.00 Leadership Sponsor) and Ralph Davis of Ralph Davis & Associates ($25.00 Sponsor). The vendor donations totaled $175.00 toward the Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship.
With regard to the goal of increasing minority recruitment into librarianship, members of the Scholarship Committee attended two meetings at the School of Library and Information Science to discuss and develop a plan to recruit, retain and advance African Americans in the library profession on April 15, 2004 and September 14, 2004, respectively. Committee members also attended a meeting with the RAAC (The Round Table for African American Concerns) on September 30, 2004 where issues of diversity in libraries were discussed and examined.
On May 10, 2004, Ellen Shuler, from the University’s Development Office, and Rayburne Turner met in Charleston, South Carolina to discuss steps to generate support for the scholarship. As a result of meeting, the donation form is currently being revised and an article to the News From the South Carolina Library Association was drafted and published to encourage participation with regard to the Scholarship. A 50/50 raffle was scheduled to be held at the Annual Conference with proceeds directed to the scholarship.
The Scholarship Committee welcomed a new member in June. SCLA President, Marilyn Tsirigotis appointed Sylvia George-Williams to serve on the Committee through 2006. Ms. George-Williams is a Reference Engineering Librarian and Assistant Librarian at Clemson University.
The 2004 Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship was awarded to Mrs. Lena Marie Lee of Columbia, South Carolina. Lena Lee is currently completing her first semester at the School of Library and Information Science. She received her undergraduate degree in African American Studies from the University of South Carolina. She is currently employed as a Research Assistant for the Education and Public Works Committee of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Lena was a former Senate Page in the South Carolina Senate. She also served in the United States Army as a Sergeant E-5 and a Military Intelligence Analyst. Ms. Lee was presented at the General Session of the Annual Conference in Greenville, South Carolina on Wednesday, October 27, 2004.
Also, at the Annual Conference, the Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship Committee, along with the RAAC (The Round Table for African American Concerns), and the School of Library and Information Science sold raffle tickets for a 50/50 drawing, which earned $204.00, and a Librarian’s Dream drawing that earned $180.00. The Librarian’s Dream raffle included a signed painting, signed books, a stay at the Hyatt Regency Greenville and gift certificates to Greenville area establishments. Mandy Turner, a law librarian with firm of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak and Stewart, won the 50/50 raffle. Libby Young, a Government Documents and Reference Librarian at Furman University Libraries, won the Librarian’s Dream raffle. The Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship Committee would like to acknowledge and thank Norman Belk and Elizabeth Shuping for this wonderful raffle package. The two raffles netted a total of $384.00 towards the Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship. Additional donors to the Scholarship included the Xi Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the Otranto Road Regional Branch of the Charleston County Public Library and Rayburne J. Turner.
