It is the purpose of the Public Services Section to promote and improve library services that direct contact between the library staff and the library user. The Section strives to support high standards of service with response to the needs of users in all library settings. This section also encourages the active exchange of ideas of its membership and strives to provide pertinent programs in providing public services in our libraries.
The Public Service officer positions for 2006 were Adam Haigh (Lander University) as chair, Chris Vidas (USC Upstate)as vice chair and Carrie Volk (Winthrop) as secretary. The Public Services Section co-sponsored with the Bibliographic Instruction Interest Group a conference program entitled, “User-Centered Librarianship 101: Library 2.0 in Three Sectors of South Carolina Libraries”. The presenters were Adam Haigh (Lander University), Dennis Adams (Beaufort County Library), and Felicia Vereen (SC State Library). Each panelist spoke about various Library 2.0 efforts at their home libraries. Over seventy participants attended the program.
Turnout for the annual business meeting following the program was small again with only three members attending. Chris Vidas, the chair-elect was elevated to the position of chair and Carrie Volk was moved into the vice-chair/chair elect slot. At this time, the position of secretary is vacant but we hope to fill it again soon.
Also this year, the section decided to resurrect the Resource Sharing Interest Group which had no officers for the previous year. At the SCLA Executive Board meeting in May, I appointed Carrie Volk as the new chair of that Interest Group. Details on their activities following her appointment will be in that annual report.
Respectfully submitted,
Adam Haigh
