PUBLIC SERVICE SECTION ANNUAL REPORT, NOVEMBER 2004

It is the purpose of the Public Services Section to promote and improve library functions that involve direct contact between the library and the library user. The Section seeks to stimulate and support high standards of service and sensitivity to the viewpoint of their users in all types of
libraries. In fulfilling its purpose the Section accepts the responsibility of promoting communication and an active exchange of ideas among its membership. Specifically, it regularly provides programs of continuing education and encourages the creation and dissemination of
publications relating to the professional interests of its members. The Section also endeavors to define and advance the concepts of interlibrary and interlibrary cooperation. <www.scla.org>

The Public Service officer positions for 2004 were Karen Swetland (USC Upstate) as chair, Geri Gaskill (Horry County Memorial Library) as Vice-Chair, and C. Camille Copper (Clemson University) as secretary.

The officers met during the SCLA Section & Roundtable Treat on
February 7th 2004 to begin efforts on planning the conference program.
The Public Service Section sponsored a panel discussion Implementing the FISH Philosophy in Your Library: From Baiting the Hook to Catching the Big Fish. Judith Head (Vice-Chair BI Interest Group) will moderate the panel. Donna Kazia (SC Appalachian Council of Governments), Jill Cornwell (Greenville County Public Library), and Brenda Vest (Aiken County Public Library) shared their experience and expertise about FISH Philosophy.

The budget for the section started the year (Feb 29, 2004) at $811.66 and closed (Sept 30, 2004) with $898.66. In addition SCLA funded a program planning grant for $150.

The annual business meeting elected the following officers:
