Public Library Section
It is the purpose of the Public Library Section to promote public libraries, to advocate ways to improve library service in South Carolina, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among public librarians, to complement and supplement continuing education activities, and to support the work of the South Carolina Library Association.
2007 SCLA Annual Conference
PUBLIC LIBRARY SECTION SPONSORED EVENTS:
Reference 2.0
Dennis Adams from Beaufort County Library, Stephen Smith from Spartanburg County Library, and Maryann Fowler from Richland County Library made up the panel of public library reference managers. They discussed the latest reference services that they are offering patrons, including e-mail reference, IM reference for adults and children, videoconferencing reference, and even blogging.
21st Century Literacy
Deborah Yoho, Director of Turning Pages (formerly Greater Columbia Literacy Council) discussed the state of literacy in South Carolina during this standing-room only program. Ms. Yoho gave practical examples of ways that libraries can build their collections, partner with other organizations, and initiate programs that encourage literacy.
PUBLIC LIBRARY SECTION CO-SPONSORED EVENTS:
Preserving and Telling Family Stories
Local storyteller Joada Hiatt shared family stories and gave tips for programming that encourages family members to share and record their stories. This program was co-sponsored with the Youth Services Section.
BUSINESS MEETING:
A brief meeting of the Public Library Section followed the Reference 2.0 program on Thursday, November 1 at 10:00. The slate of new officers for 2008 was presented and approved. The new officers for the Public Library Section are:
