2004 Public Library Section Annual Report
The Executive Committee met in person only on two occasions, after the February 7 and March 6 SCLA Retreats. The Officers conducted all other business successfully through e-mail, starting with the reactivation of three of the five mandatory Public Library Section standing committees. The Legislative Committee chair was Frank Gadsden (members Vesta Baughman, Carl Stone, and Bertha Tucker). The Library and Personnel Standards Committee chair was David Moore, (members Geri Gaskill, Joi Jones, Paula Paul and Prudence Taylor). The Public Relations Committee chair was Ann Rosen (members Penny Harvey, Jayne Moorman, and Beth Woodring).
On August 12, the Section cosponsored a one-day disaster preparedness workshop, “Libraries – What to Do Come Hell or High Water,” with the Palmetto Archives, Libraries, and Museums Council on Preservation. PALMCOP chair Harlan Greene conducted the workshop at the Bostick Auditorium of the Richland County Public Library, where 44 participants (of 45 registrants) received training that enabled them to start their own institutional continuity of operations plan. Profit totaled $949.28 ($474.64 for each organization, with $1245.00 gross income, minus $295.72 for flyers, mailing, refreshments and other expenses). Plans are under way to continue this training with a “mock disaster” workshop in Spring 2005, as a collaboration of the SC Archival Association, PALMCOP and the Public Library Section.
The Public Library Section was involved in three programs at the 2004 SCLA Annual Pre-Conference and Conference sessions in Greenville, SC. The October 27 Pre-Conference Table Talk, “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About South Carolina, But Did Not Know How to Ask,” was presented by Marion Edmonds, Director of Communications at the SC Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. There were 16 attendees at this free program.
On October 28, our Section sponsored the “From Smart Card to RFID, What Does It Mean for Libraries?” The conference program was presented by Belinda Mason of the Dorchester County Library and Bruce Heimburger of the Richland County Public Library. There were 67 attendees at this program. The Health Sciences Round Table and the Public Library Section cosponsored the “Let’s Get Health! Reliable Information on the Web” program, with speakers Toni Yancey of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Coordinator Janice May of the Hands on Health Program, and Nancy McKee of the MUSC Library. There were 41 attendees at this program.
The Public Library Section also held elections for its 2005 officers at the Public Library Section Business meeting on Thursday, October 28, 2004. Elected were: Clo Cammarata as Chair, Sara Thigpen as Vice Chair, John Gaumer as Secretary/Treasurer, Stephen Smith as Delegate-at-large, and Dennis Adams as Past Chair (continuing officer under new bylaws). At this business meeting, the revised Section bylaws were also approved by those in attendance.
