2005 Annual Report

The Paraprofessionals roundtable of the South Carolina Library Association had an exciting year. On July 22, 2005 we hosted our annual workshop at the beautiful John’s Island Branch of the Charleston Public Library. Darlene Jackson was our gracious hostess. We were supported by 35 attendees from all over the state as we listen to an excellent presentation by Priscilla White titled “Empowerment: Don’t Just Survive, Thrive!” The presentation was a mixture of excellent advice and humor. White stressed the importance of a positive attitude and choices to achieve your goals. The workshop was a huge success as we wrapped things up with a delicious buffet lunch served by Royal Grand Events caterers.

Before adjourning, many participants expressed an interest in becoming members of the association. Ms Jackson then extended an invitation to us for a tour of the beautiful John’s Island Library.

The paraprofessionals sponsored two sessions at the annual conference of the South Carolina Library Association. Again Priscilla White held the audience attention as she shared with us her version of “Staying on a Winning Pace” as the session speaker for the paraprofessionals. Laughter filled the room as usual and we were assured if we tried it (laughter) we would like it. Two ALA (American Library Association) memberships for the paraprofessional section were given away as door prizes.

The second session was entitled “Support Staff’s Perceptions on Technology Training Needs in University Libraries” presented by Sha Li Zhang of the University of North Carolina. It was a very informative session and handouts were available to all that attended.

At our annual business meeting the following persons were elected as Paraprofessional Roundtable officers for 2006:
