Minutes of NMRT meeting

10/24/02

Call to order: Ellan Jenkinson

Mandy Turner, vice-chair and Burton Callicott secretary present.

Ellan expressed dismay at the lack of turn out for the meeting.

Nominations for forthcoming Chair, Mandy Turner, and Vice-Chair, Burton Callicott were approved pending discussion with Jeanette Bergeron considering that we only had three members present.

Ellan promised to do her best to drum up interest in the NMRT as well as locate a volunteer for the position of secretary in the final months of her term as chair.

Discussion centered on ideas for gaining more members and encouraging more participation. These included:

Contacting Davis College for help in obtaining a list of recent MLIS grads
Establishing connections with LISA chapter at Davis
Establishing a mentor network for current MLIS students, recent grads, and recent hires in libraries
Sponsoring and organizing our own “new voices” program at the next SCLA conference
Organizing an informal “coffee klatch” at the next SCLA conference
Organizing fun “outings”-dinners and/or activities for NMRT members
Establishing an awards committee to revive the “Outstanding New Librarian” as well as the “Grassroots” award which has been the province of the NMRT

Discussion then turned to the business of putting together an awards committee and checking with sponsors to see that we still had their financial support. Burton volunteered to contact a friend who works for Baker and Taylor in order to discover who oversees the accounts for Library Association awards. Burton also agreed to take the minutes.
