2004 New Members Round Table Annual Report
December, 2004
All in all, it was a good year for the New Members Round Table. We had a full, active board that worked well together. In an effort to make our conference presentation more meaningful and relevant to our members, we took a bit of a gamble and experimented with a conference presentation contest: New Voices. We offered hotel and travel reimbursement and a chance to present at the annual conference to the best submissions.
Our gamble paid off and we were pleased to have Terence Kemper present his paper entitled “Where Are They and What Are They Doing? College Students and Reference
Service.” The text of this paper is available on the NMRT page of the SCLA web site. We experimented also with our traditional annual conference breakfast. We increased the scope of our informational/recruiting efforts by joining forces with the Health Sciences Roundtable.
In addition to this, we invited any and all SCLA executives to the event with the hope that new members would have a chance to learn and network with more veteran
SCLA librarians. This proved to be mutually beneficial as many execs were interested in locating potential board members for their sections, committees, and roundtables. The event was very well attended (and in fact we actually ran out of food and coffee!).
I was particularly pleased with our selection for this year’s Outstanding New Librarian Award, Derek Wilmott. After getting a chance to get to know Derek a little at the conference, I understood why his nomination letter was so exuberant. We all feel certain that the award could not have gone to a more deserving person and we feel certain that Derek will go on to do great things in SC libraries.
In terms of Roundtable business, I am pleased to report that we updated our by-laws to reflect new technologies and archiving practices. We also elected a new slate of officers:

I would be remiss not to give props to last year’s Chair, Mandy Turner, who nurtured the renaissance of this roundtable and made things very easy for me as chair. I also want to thank my vice-chair, Laura Baker, as well as my secretary, Marie Deganhardt, who proved to be great sounding boards and who were instrumental in arranging the breakfast and the award.
