2002 SCLA New Members Round Table 2002 Annual Report

The primary goals of the New Members Round Table are to encourage active involvement in SCLA and other professional associations among new librarians and paraprofessionals and to encourage interchange among new members. Membership is open to any librarian, paraprofessional, or student in library school who has worked less than five years in the state of South Carolina.

In 2002 we have worked to re-build the infrastructure of our roundtable and increase our overall membership. We now have a full slate of current and incoming officers and are working to re-build our standing committees, particularly the Awards Committee. Membership totaled 34 this year, which represents a slight increase.

Conference Activities

The following events were sponsored by NMRT at the SCLA/SELA Joint Conference:

Friday, October 25
SELA/SCLA First Timer’s Breakfast
NMRT co-sponsored the breakfast with SELA New Members Roundtable. Approximately 30 SCLA and SELA members attended. Remarks were given by Charles Beard and Tom Gilson. This event was sponsored by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.

Saturday, October 26
‘Libraries and John Bennett’ presented by Harlan Greene, College of Charleston Harlan Greene gave a wonderful presentation on John Bennett (1865–1956), a prominent Charlestonian and long-time library advocate. Approximately 12 people attended. Afterward, Mr. Greene signed copies of his book, Mr. Skylark: John Bennett and the Charleston Renaissance.

NMRT Business Meeting

We also held a business meeting on the 26th. The turnout was very disappointing, with the only people in attendance being the 2002 officers. At the time of the meeting we did not have a full slate of candidates for 2003 officers. Minutes were taken by our Secretary, Burton Callicott.
