SOUTH CAROLINA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

COMMITTEE RETREAT

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

MINUTES

MARCH 6, 2004

The meeting was called to order at 10:10 a.m. by Chairman Durant. Present were Joyce Durant and Pam Draper who were later joined by Paul Lewis. Durant reported there were 322 current members of SCLA which was a significant increase from the 185 reported at the February retreat. A second letter was mailed in February to those 2003 members who hadn’t already renewed and this helped boost the renewals. In addition, and with the assistance of another staff member, Durant made an appeal to her staff at Francis Marion University and their membership renewals went from 4 paid members to seventeen paid members as of March 5.

Things to do to continue increasing the membership include:

  • Members E-mail co-workers with reminders of the benefits of belonging to SCLA
  • Have library Directors who have renewed to remind their friends and acquaintances who are the leaders of their operations to renew or join the Association
  • Plan to offer a 10% discount for those who renew for 2005 at the conference (President Tsirigotis will be asked to include this in her call to conference letter)

Also briefly discussed the feasibility of developing an electronic renewal form with online payment option. Consensus - probably not cost effective.
