PLANS FOR THE COMING YEAR
With all but one of the committee positions filled there are some facets that can be addressed at this time. The first meeting of the committee will take place early in January 2003.
The intent in reactivating this committee was for the State of South Carolina to join in the effort of ALA President, Mitch Friedman to improve salaries and to reach pay equity with other comparable professions. The other aspect, which must also be addressed, is the improvement of the image of library workers. The handbook created by the Task Force on Better Salaries and Pay Equity contains specific means to be used to accomplish that goal.
The thrust this year will be to gather information from around the State from the various types of libraries as to salaries of both paraprofessional and degreed librarians. Much of this work should be able to be completed from committee members’ home institutions requiring a minimum number of meetings. This is also to respect the fact that all of us are already responsible for heavy workloads.
Several other State Library Associations have compiled this information and we can easily adapt their processes and procedures to South Carolina. Ms. Libby Law from the State Library has gathered some of this information and will share that with the committee.
The envisioned product of the committee members’ efforts should be snapshot of salaries of various library workers throughout the State of South Carolina. . It is our aim to be totally inclusive. While it seems a daunting task, salaries for everyone from entry-level clerk to library director must be documented.
