2002 joint conference report

We sponsored two events. On October 24 we offered an all-day hands-on workshop in the free GPO ACCESS Web search service, conducted by Matt Landgraf and Jason Humm, expert trainers from the U. S. Government Printing Office. All participants had their own dedicated workstations with live connection to the Web. Participants paid a registration fee of $30 for the workshop, with lunch and refreshments provided.

Participants said they found the event to be very interesting and useful to them in their work. The Round Table made a profit of $287.01 on the event. GPO ACCESS is the elegant Web search engine for federal government information designed by the U. S. Government Printing Office to enable citizens to access government resources in electronic format. GPO ACCESS is structured so as to allow more “intelligent,” structured searching of electronic documents than is possible with the search engines such as google.com/unclesam/ With ACCESS, for example, one can easily trace legislation from bill to inclusion in the United States Code and similarly trace regulations using the daily Federal Register and the Code of Federal Regulations.

Our program on October 25 was a one-hour demonstration of GPO ACCESS presented by GPO expert trainers Matt Landgraf and Jason Humm. This event was a shorter version of the full-scale This drew a crowd of about 35. The folks who attended asked a lot of questions and applauded at the end of the session.

Finances

Prior to the October Joint Conference the Round Table had in its treasury $666.46. This came from dues and proceeds from a successful all-day workshop on Census and other government statistical data held at the Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina, in 2001. The preconference workshop in October 2002 brought in $630 from registration and there was an expenditure of $342.99 for lunch and break refreshments, leaving a profit of $287.01. As of today the Round Table has $953.47 in its treasury.

Other activities

Work was begun on an updated online directory of government documents collections and services in South Carolina, to include both state and federal depositories, plus international document collections as well. This work will provide ongoing updates to the excellent directory created by Paul Lewis on the SCLA GODORT Web site. We will encourage libraries throughout the state to link from their Web pages to the directory.

SCLA GODORT members donated South Carolina products to the American Library Association Government Documents Round Table’s silent auction at the ALA Annual Conference to raise funds for the W. David Rozkuszka Scholarship. The scholarship provides $3,000 to a library staff member pursuing an MLIS or equivalent and plans to work with government information. Palmetto State goodies were so numerous that they were auctioned off in two lots and raised nearly $300 of the $1,350 netted from the silent auction.

Librarians from four federal depository libraries participated in National Library Legislative Day in May, speaking to Members of Congress and their staff about issues affecting the Government Printing Office and the Federal Depository Library Program. Finally, we were specially honored when one of our Round Table members and immediate past Chair, Bill Sudduth, Head, Documents and Microforms Department, Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina, was elected as Chair of the American Library Association Government Documents Round Table.

Respectfully submitted,
David Heisser, Chair, SCLA GODORT
