SCLA President’s Message – 2008
Dear SCLA Members,
I hope you will notice the many changes for SCLA this year. We have a new look with a new logo. Thanks to Michelle Hannon of the Greenville County Public Library, who won the new logo contest. It is my hope that this one small step takes SCLA to new levels. SCLA can continue to grow and change to meet the needs of the members with your help and involvement.
SCLA also now has a YouTube channel. This channel will have a variety of brief informational videos posted to provide members and those interested in SC’s libraries with updates, information on future events, and on some occasions my thoughts on libraries and what libraries should be doing in these competitive times.
I would also like to encourage all library staff members to get business cards. I think it is very important to promote our services and a very simple but effective way to do this is by handing a patron, friend, or colleague a business card. For the price of 2 cups of coffee, you can get professional looking business cards. Web sites such as www.vistaprint.com offers free business cards and all you have to pay is the shipping and handling charges which is usually under $10.00. Promote your library and its services!
We also have a wonderful executive committee this year. Libby Young, 1st VP/President Elect from Furman University is going to be in charge of the annual conference in Greenville, October 21–24 and is already planning it. If you’re not already on the SCLA listserv, join today. You will be notified of upcoming workshops and happenings in the SC library community.
Please visit my personal blog, Libraries & Life at curtisrogers.blogspot.com and see what is going on not only with SCLA but also with libraries in general. You can subscribe to the blog with your email address or if you’re more advanced, add it to your favorite RSS reader.
Libraries are exciting places to work and visit, so lets do everything we can to make SCLA an exciting organization for library staff. Since SCLA is a volunteer organization, it takes each and every one of us to get involved and help make it what we want it to be so if you have thought about helping, please do. There are many ways to help make the association great and all it takes is a little time and energy.
Get involved. Learn. Share. Teach. Enjoy Libraries!
Dr. Curtis R. Rogers
2008 President.
