Description of Duties and Responsibilities: South Carolina State University invites applicants and nominations for position of Dean, Library and Information Services. The University seeks a Dean with a dynamic vision for future library services and collections and excellent leadership ability to advocate, promote, and implement strategies that will advance the mission and strategic plan of the library and the University. The successful candidate must be committed to embracing and enhancing the land grant mission of instruction, research, and service to a diverse population of students, faculty and staff. The successful candidate must also have a distinguished record of accomplishments in librarianship and a demonstrated knowledge of trends, issues, and initiatives in libraries and higher education. Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must. The University seeks a leader to partner with the President, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Board of Trustees and the Capital Projects Manager in a major program of library expansion. The Dean reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Deans’ Council and the Educational Policies Council. The Dean supervises a staff of seven (7) librarians, thirteen (13) support staff, and fifteen (15) student workers.
The Miller F. Whittaker Library was constructed in 1969 with the mezzanine addition in 1979. The archives and historical collection and various print and electronic collections are housed in more than 47,500 square feet of space. A new library will include a three-story steel framed brick and glass structure, natural lighting from windows, and approximately 74,500 square feet. The archives and historical collection will be housed in the newly constructed James E. Clyburn Transportation Center, but under the administration of the Dean.
The position reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. It is a non-tenure track position. This position is available July 1, 2008.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide strong, proactive leadership in the administration of the library: engage in strategic planning, policy making, budget and management of library resources, assessment, and evaluation; support the development and promotion of a strong information literacy instruction program; provide and support student and faculty research; collaborate with other campus units to integrate state-of-the art technologies in teaching and research; develop strong and effective working relationships with all constituents (internal and exte rnal); and support University initiatives;
- Provide strong, effective representation of the library within the University: participate in the institutional processes of planning, budget development, policy development, and decision making; establish strong effective relations with faculty, staff, administrators, the Board of Trustees, and other areas including distance education, University computing, and technology services; and
- Provide strong, proactive leadership and personal presence external to and within the University: build visibility and image recognition through university relationships; develop partnerships with local, state, and national collegial communities including 1890 and land grant institutions; and engage in fundraising for library program development
Minimum Requirements for Entry into Position:
- MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution and five (5) years of faculty and/or administrative experience in an academic or e ducational institution
Preferred Requirements for Entry into Position:
- MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution and five (5) years of faculty and/or administrative experience in an academic or educational institution
- A doctorate in an appropriate field is preferred but not required
- Prior experience as a library director
- Knowledge and understanding of education methods as they relate to the development of information literacy in the disciplines

Head of Access Services, School of Medicine Library, University of South Carolina
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Library seeks an energetic, service-oriented professional for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position as Head of Access Services.
Responsibilities include: supervision and scheduling of all circulation activities; financial transactions and statistics collection for the department; collection maintenance; management of library equipment, including printers, photocopiers, and microfilm reader; room scheduling; and maintenance of a card access security system and the library’s video surveillance equipment. LIBRARIAN II / WEB ADMINISTRATOR (Beaufort County)
Responsible for management of the library web site. Works with library’s Web Site Committee to develop web applications, content and materials including User Education pages and tutorials. Ensures that applicable standards such as HTML and link validity and site navigability are met. Provides user support and training. Serves as back up to Systems Specialist.

Archivist Radford University McConnell Library
Radford University seeks an experienced, enthusiastic and proactive librarian to join its public services team and provide leadership for McConnell Library’s archival collections. This is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial archivist to participate in the design and development of an archives and special collections reading room and related facilities.
The Archivist is charged with managing the acquisition and accessioning of appropriate materials for the archives and building suitable collections with regional interest. The University Libraries seeks an individual for the position of Director of Administrative Services. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this position will direct the Libraries’ administrative services including facilities management, human resources, security, inventory control, statistical reporting, strategic planning, and coordinate issues related to faculty status. Instruction Librarian
Coker College in Hartsville, SC seeks a motivated, innovative, and enthusiastic Instruction Librarian to be responsible for the development, implementation, promotion, delivery, and assessment of the library’s new credit-bearing library courses to both traditional and adult students in both the day and evening programs. The Instruction Librarian will also teach the existing course-related library instruction sessions, as well as plan and instruct information and technology literacy workshops. Additionally, s/he will design and implement outreach programs. The successful incumbent will work constructively in team efforts, use independent judgment in handling problems, and maintain close professional relationships with teaching faculty, students and library colleagues. This includes working with campus and student groups to incorporate library promotion in campus events, and promote the use of library services and resources amongst the academic population of the college.

PUBLIC SERVICES LIBRARIAN - NON TENURE TRACK - EVENING
The University of South Carolina Upstate seeks a Public Services Librarian, non-tenure track, 12-month appointment. During fall and spring semesters, the hours are Sunday through Thursday, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Reference desk coverage hours are 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and all day Sunday. Hours will be different for summer sessions and during breaks and holiday periods. Assists in closing the library each evening. Primary duties are heavily concentrated in, but are not limited to: Reference, Collection Development and Information Literacy Instruction. Thomas Cooper Library, Columbia, SC
The Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina, Columbia,
seeks a highly motivated, innovative, service-oriented Cataloging
Librarian who will be responsible for original and complex copy
cataloging of print and electronic monographs and serials in a variety
of subject areas and formats according to established standards and
departmental policies. The Cataloging Librarian will work with other
department staff to plan, develop and implement ongoing activities,
policies and special projects.
The University of South Carolina enrolls approximately 18,000
undergraduate students and 8,000 graduate students on the Columbia
campus. The Thomas Cooper Library owns in excess of 3 million volumes,
subscribes to 16,000 journals in print and provides access to a wide
variety of reference resources and journal collections via the Internet.
The Library is a member of SOLINET, OCLC, the Association of Research
Libraries, and the Center for Research Libraries.
Salary and Benefits: Salary commensurate with experience and
qualifications. Hiring range starts at $34,000. Benefits include
medical, dental, state retirement or optional retirement plan.

communication skills with willingness to learn new procedures and computer
applications.
