In 2002, the Continuing Education Committee of SCLA began to compile a chart of training topics and dates for continuing education activities in the library and information science professions impacting South Carolina librarians. The purpose is to show dates that are already booked for training as well as to identify gaps in subject coverage.

South Carolina State Library Children’s Services Exchanges (Small Libraries), 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Public library children’s services managers will be invited to exchange information and discuss topics of common concern. Large libraries that serve populations over 150,000; medium sized libraries that serve populations between 75,000 and 149,999; and small libraries serving populations under 74,999 are invited to participate. Panning for Gold University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science Caring for Church Archives Collections Jeanette Bergeron, Archivist for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and author of Manual for South Carolina Religious Archives and Recordkeeping The morning session will concentrate on “getting started”: selecting a committee, developing policies, selecting space, accessioning materials, purchasing supplies, and obtaining regular funding. The afternoon session will focus on “ongoing tasks”: care and preservation of materials, cataloging options from inventories to databases, classification and arrangement options, and usage of basic automation.

Registration Fee: $65.00 (Lunch is included, along with an extensive how-to-do-it manual). The class will be taught in the Crumley Archives, 4201 North Main Street, Columbia, SC.
