College and University Section

It is the purpose of the College and University Section to serve persons interested in all aspects of academic libraries. Its objective is to stimulate and support high standards of library service in colleges and universities. It encourages professional growth through attendance at professional meetings, promotion of communication and exchange of ideas among its members, continuing education opportunities, and dissemination of publications of professional interest to its membership. It represents academic library concerns to other Sections within the SCLA as well as to groups and persons outside the Association.

Please join us for the annual South Carolina Library Association, College and University Section workshop. The workshop is intended to share cutting-edge initiatives on Librarian-Faculty collaboration and provide opportunities for networking on this important topic with your colleagues from across the state.

The morning sessions will feature expert speakers on collaboration from both the faculty and librarian perspectives. Dr. William Hine, Professor of History at South Carolina State University, will share insight and advice based on his many and varied collaborative experiences with library services in a presentation titled, “Why I Love Librarians”. The librarian perspective will be presented by two librarians from Georgia State University: Dr. M. Lyn Thaxton, Associate Professor and Behavioral Sciences Liaison, and Ms. Tammy Sugarman, Associate University Librarian for Research Services. Their presentation is titled, “Making It Happen: Librarian-Faculty Collaboration to Improve Student Learning”. They have both been active in collaboration and in publishing about their experiences.

In the afternoon, a panel of our own South Carolina librarians will discuss their exciting collaborative projects, covering a variety of areas including collection development, research assistance, and instruction. The panelists are Dr. Andrew Kearns, University of South Carolina Upstate; Ms. Camille McCutcheon, University of South Carolina Upstate; and Ms. Candace Moorer, Medical University of South Carolina.

PARKING FOR THE WORKSHOP:
Parking is limited, so carpooling is recommended. Richland County Public Library is located on the corner of Assembly and Hampton streets. See map at: http://tinyurl.com/n8x3o. Two small parking lots are available behind the Library. One is on the corner of Hampton and Park streets, the other is further down Park Street, heading toward Washington Street (see map) on the left. Metered parking is available along the streets surrounding the Library and the cost is .25 for 20 minutes. Please make sure that you have change on hand if you park at a meter.

There is also a City of Columbia parking garage located at 1100 Washington Street – this is on the opposite side of Assembly Street from the Richland County Public Library. According to the City of Columbia Parking Facilities, parking is $1.00 for the first ½ hour, $1.00 for the second half hour, and $1.00 for every hour thereafter.

Once you are inside the Library, take the escalator down to the lower level, where the Lucy Hampton Bostick Auditorium is located.
