2003 Annual Conference
The College and University Section sponsored a conference presentation by Richard Moul, director of the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries, entitled “PASCAL: History and Direction.” Moul is the first director of what promises to be an important and successful organization. Thorough and engaging, Moul’s presentation outlined the genesis of PASCAL and its goals for the future. Moul sees the larger mission as falling under three areas or “engines” that drive the organization:
- print resource sharing through the use of a shared catalog
- electronic resource sharing through the use of collective bargaining
- archival resource sharing through digitization
In his presentation, Moul discussed plans, options, and major players. In just a short time, Moul has done much to get this important partnership project moving. The prospect of greatly expanding library holdings and services with minimal costs created a good deal of buzz. The turnout for this presentation was quite good… so good in fact that we had to scramble to find enough chairs to accommodate all of the attendees. There was a real sense of hope and excitement about the future of SC academic libraries following the presentation-a welcome relief from the doom and gloom of this years budget woes.
Turnout for the annual business meeting was also outstanding. We went from two attendees in 2002 to at least thirty this year. At this meeting we not only elected a full slate of officers for 2004 but also two SC chapter representatives for ALA’s College and Research Libraries: John Prtichett and Drucie Gullion. With the election of these representatives we hope to reinvigorate the SC chapter of ACRL. Based on the feedback that I received at the conference, I am confident that the coming year will be fruitful and rewarding for SC college and university libraries.
2003 Budget
Thanks to minimal expenditures and a healthy membership, the College and University Section Budget is looking good at $2,300.09 as of November 18, 2003.
