2002 Annual Report of the Awards Committee

South Carolina Library Association Awards Committee 2002 Annual Report After a slow beginning during which our committee figured out that for which we were responsible, we advertised for award nominations on the SCLA web site and by word of mouth. We also sought to catch up on honoring retirees who might be awarded Lifetime Memberships in the Association.

The awards presented at the October joint conference of SELA and SCLA were as follows: 2002 Friend of South Carolina Libraries, Dr. Randy Akers, Executive Director of the South Carolina Humanities Council; Outstanding Librarian for 2002, Mary Bull, DISCUS Project Director; South Carolina SIRS Intellectual Freedom Award for 2002, Carl Stone, Director of the Anderson County Library; President’s Gavel Award, Jeanette Bergeron, Archivist at Crumley Lutheran Archives.

The following librarians were awarded Honorary Lifetime Memberships: Minnie M. Johnson, retired from Miller Whittaker Library, South Carolina State University; Ted Zuppa, retired from Francis Marion University; and Lea Walsh and John Landrum, both retired from the South Carolina State Library.

I thank all who served on the Awards Committee, with special thanks to Rodger Smith and his colleague Frances Richardson at the Charleston County Library who produced the award certificates.

Respectfully submitted,

Martha L. Stackel
