2002 Annual Report of the Round Table for African American Concerns

2002 was an exciting and active year for the Round Table for African American Concerns (RAAC). The leadership for 2002 included: Chair, Rayburne J. Turner, Charleston County Public Library; Vice-Chair, Alex Currin, Anderson Public Library and Secretary, Joyce Durant, Francis Marion University.

2002 Mission

The mission for 2002 was to reconnect with members and encourage new members to join the Round Table for African American Concerns. The mission also included a theme of continuing education based on cultural heritage.

Membership
2002 Beginning Membership: 19

2002 Ending Membership: 24

The Membership includes African American professionals and paraprofessionals from academic and public libraries. A goal and an outreach strategy was devised at the Annual Conference’s business meeting to increase membership of others who work in libraries in South Carolina, specifically targeting African Americans and other minorities.
2002 Activities

At the beginning of 2002, the membership for the Round Table was nineteen (19). On Friday, April 5, 2002, the Leadership of RAAC met at the Richland County Public Library in Columbia, South Carolina to plan the agenda, programming and develop ways to increase membership for 2002. The Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary had a productive meeting that included discussions on membership, a summer workshop, the SCLA/SELA Joint Conference and the SCLA Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship.
The following occurred during the year:

  1. RAAC created a web-based email list so current and potential members of RAAC can be aware of the Round Table’s activities and actions.
  2. On Thursday, July 18, 2002, the Round Table for African American Concerns held an African American genealogy workshop at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture located on the campus of the College of Charleston. The workshop theme was, Finding the Past: African American Genealogy in South Carolina. There were twenty-seven librarians present from across the State of South Carolina. Mayor Joseph P. Riley designated by proclamation that Thursday, July 18, 2002 be set aside in recognition of the Round Table for African American Concerns and all other minority librarians who serve Charleston and other communities in South Carolina. Speakers for the event were Mrs. Alexia Jones Helsley, Consultant for the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and Mr. Sherman E. Pyatt, Archivist at the Avery Research Center. Mrs. Helsley shared her extensive knowledge about genealogy and lead group activities that were informative and enjoyable. Mr. Pyatt shared folklore and folk wisdom of the African American experience, conducted a tour of the Avery Research Center, and shared with attendees its unique history. The attendees also enjoyed lowcountry cuisine for lunch prepared by the Master Chef of Charleston. Regions Bank supplied souvenirs for the workshop attendees and Francis Marion University supplied the conference bags.
  3. On July 26, 2002, the Round Table’s Chair, Rayburne Turner attended the annual summer workshop sponsored by the Paraprofessional Round Table at the Crowne Plaza Resort on Hilton Head Island. He brought greetings on behalf of the Round Table for African American Concerns and the South Carolina Library Association. He shared information about the SCLA/SELA Joint Conference and expressed RAAC’s delight in co-hosting a joint workshop at the October conference.
  4. The Round Table for African American Concerns’ workshop for the SCLA/SELA Joint Conference held in Charleston, South Carolina on Friday, October 25, continued to focus on the theme of African American history and heritage. The Round Table invited Dr. Dianne Johnson, Associate Professor of English at the University of South Carolina to speak. Writing under the pseudonym of Dinah Johnson, Dr. Johnson, the author of several children’s books, shared with conference attendees her books and thoughts on growing up as an African American child in South Carolina. The theme for the workshop was, “Reflections on a South Carolina Heritage.” This session was held in conjunction with the Paraprofessional Section of the SCLA. A total of 48 librarians and paraprofessionals attended. Also during the Conference, the Round Table for African American Concerns was honored to serve as honorary co-sponsors with the SELA’s African American Issues Round Table at their workshop. The workshop was entitled, “Library Service to African Americans in Kentucky: From the Reconstruction Era to the 1960s”. The presenter was Reinette F. Jones, a Librarian from the University of Kentucky. It was an informative workshop that discussed the history of Kentucky and the role it played in the development of public libraries, library education, African American library employment issues and services to African Americans.
  5. Finally, since the purpose of RAAC is to promote the recruitment and retention of minority librarians in South Carolina, RAAC contributed to the SCLA Scholarship for Diversity in Librarianship by becoming a “Supporting Donor.”
